A Taiwanese man visited Battery Park City to put on a kite exhibit. Despite acquiring all the proper permits, the FAA ordered him to stop flying his kite on account of low-flying helicopter traffic. So, we and our elected officials can't tell the FAA what to do in the air, but the FAA can tell us what to do on the ground. Helicopter traffic is hurting our quality of life from every direction. This story is 10 years old! Mayor De Blasio, it is high time you put a stop to the excessive tourist helicopter traffic!
In response to a letter sent by NY elected officials to the FAA in December (see previous post) urging action to reduce helicopter noise, a closed meeting between FAA and EDC officials and elected representatives was held yesterday. Attendees included Carmine Gallo, FAA Regional Administrator for the Eastern Region, David Hopkins, Director of Aviation for the EDC and US Representatives Jerrold Nadler (NY), Nydia Velazquez (NY) and Albio Sires (NJ). State Senator Daniel Squadron and Councilwoman Margaret Chin were also present.
The gist of the meeting is this: 1) the FAA and EDC deny there's a noise problem despite countless complaints from NYC residents and letters from officials going back several years (see below); 2) even if there is a noise problem, there's nothing they can do about it and will fight to retain the status quo.
Mayor deBlasio - it is high time you took the rains on this!
We've gotten a great response to The NY Times article everyone! People have been writing in from all over the metropolitan area, wanting to know how they can join our fight!
Check out this video recently shot by John from Jersey City which shows the extreme frequency of these sightseeing tours. There are 4 of them in a 3-minute window.
Non-essential NYC Tourist helicopters flying at low altitude around well below 700 feet altitude South bound and very close to NJ shoreline at downtown Jersey City waterfront over Hudson River. Extreme number in frequency of helicopters. I am only pointing out South Bound flights and I can clearly hear North Bound helicopters by Battery Park City also with my windows closed.
I also would like to point out a major potential risk from these helicopter flights due to close proximity to one of the heavily populated areas in the world. We all read about what happened to News helicopter crash in Seattle today!
Planenoise.com is useless reporting these complaints because it does not remedy anything. I personally sent over 400 complaints using this system since Nov 6 2013 but nothing has been done. Helicopters might move a hundred feet more center of Hudson for an hour or two only to move back close to shore flying over Hyatt hotel in Jersey City. None of them, I repeat not a single one of them are observing 900 feet altitude flying South bound as suggested by the FAA. Light blue color tour helicopter has been flying under 600 feet over Hyatt hotel all day today!
Stop the Chop NYNJ is a local grassroots coalition of NY and NJ residents seeking to educate the public about the adverse effects of helicopters sightseeing tours on the environment and on the health and welfare of the two million people living underneath their Hudson River flight path.
